Psalm 90:12 NLT

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

Thinking of something to write this morning to close out the year of 2013 the above verse was pressed on my heart. As I’m sure many of you will agree, the year flew by. For most of us there were probably many ups and many downs. Throughout the world there seemed to be many downs also, with very little hope for brighter days, if, of course you are without the everlasting hope and promise of Our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

But the first spoke to my heart because it very important that we live in such a way. If our lives are filled with procrastination, whether spiritually, relational, physically, etc. We are running a great risk of coming up short of the abundant life, not material abundance, but rather abundance of joy, peace, and hope; because you are anchored in God’s Promises. God also wants you to have eternal life with Him in Heaven.

Another translation of this verse says to “teach us to number our days”. Why is that important? God’s Word has taught it is important for many reasons, here are a few.

1. God has placed us here for a purpose, that purpose is to glorify Him in all that we do.

2. To have the Love of God in us in such abundance that it overflows into the lives of those around us, especially those in need or with less than us, whether emotionally or physically.

3. To live for our eternal home, which is Heaven, so that the things, pleasures and pursuits of this life are not our primary concern.

4. To build healthy, genuine, lasting relationships that exemplify the Love of Christ, so that all who see will come to know the saving Grace and Love of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Those are just a few, but pretty much the foundation. These are all things God’s Word repeatedly teaches us.

For those of you that do not have this, or are struggling to achieve this here are a few practical steps.

1. Acknowledge you are a sinner. If you don’t think you are a sinner, the rest will not apply. If you’re not sure, God’s Word clearly says we are all sinners:

Romans 3:23 NKJV

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

2. Repent. Sin and God cannot be together. We stumble and make mistakes that may be sinful. But habitual, hard-hearted sin needs to be cut out of your life. If this step is not followed the rest will have no effect.

2. Believe. Believe that Jesus is Lord and that He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead. Believe that the blood of Jesus was shed for all mankind, and that God desires all to be saved, including you no matter what you have done. If you do not believe, the rest will be difficult.

3. Pray. Ask God into your heart. Jesus is waiting for you to do so. If your struggling with things, just talk to God, He is there, He is real, and He is listening to every thought and word you have. Be honest, He already knows your heart.

Revelation 3:20

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

4. Read God’s Holy, Inspired, Living Word. The Bible.

Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

A life with God as your personal Lord and Savior is complete. It was what we were created for, He is what every heart longs for. No heart will ever be satisfied without Him.

May God stir your heart,  and have a blessed 2014!
