Reckless Relationships

December 24, 2013

Matthew 22:37-39 NLT

37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself ‘.

The two greatest commandments, Jesus sums up everything for us here making it very clear. The two most important relationships that matter most in all the universe is that we have a great relationship with God, and that we have wonderful relationships with the people in and around our lives.

I just completed a Video Bible Study titled Reckless Faith by Pastor Kevin Harney of Shoreline Church in California. It was awesome, I’m very grateful to him, and look forward to start applying the many things I learned. One section was titled Reckless Relationships, and Pastor Kevin gave three things we need to do to be reckless in our relationships, with the above verse and mindset being the foundation. However, today we will just look at one.

The first is that we need to build healthy Christian relationships. We need to be plugged in to a church body. There is no such thing as an isolated Christian that is bringing God glory in everything he does. We also need small groups, we need to dig a little deeper than the not so intimate relationships on Sunday. We need to be growing in a small group that is mission minded (spreading God’s Word) first, community oriented (friendships and relationships) second. As men, we need a handful of other men that know all about you, they know your pain, your struggles and your shortcomings, they need to hold you accountable, they need to be watching your back. If no one is doing this, who is holding you in check.

We are fallen and sinful by nature, we cannot do it alone. When you have developed this handful of men you can trust, now we start building each other in love. To be built-in Love is to build in Truth. We must in all humility, gentleness, and love be truthful with each other. If you are doing something that is contrary to God’s Word, as your brother, I need to call you on it, but the same goes for me. We must not stand by and watch each other deviate from God’s path, because we don’t want to offend each other. If I really love you, I will tell you what is going to hurt you. Just as important is that we also must listen to this advice, if we don’t like it, then get another brother for confirmation. In conflict the Bible teaches us to use the testimony of two or three witnesses.  BUT, everything must align with God’s Word not our opinions, or feelings.

So step out of your comfort zone, make time, there is always time, stop making excuses and get plugged in with men (or women with women) that you can trust, that have God’s fruit in their lives, and, are working at being better men, husbands and fathers with their identity in Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 10:25 NLT

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

To often we use OUR opinions or OUR feelings to call out another Christian in the wrong and it usually backfires. Feelings get hurt and relationships are broken. We need to always use the Word of God for correction and guidance. Well said.

    • Yup it’s very easy to go off track on our own. But the Rock of God’s Word never fails, much better option! Thanks brotha Mike!
