Have the Mind of Christ

December 13, 2013

Philippians 1:27; 2:2, 5 NKJV

27…that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel…2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind…5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…

One spirit, one mind, like-minded, same love, one accord, one mind, mind of Christ Jesus. Within the span of this short passage there is a very clear and common point that the Apostle Paul is trying to get across to the believers at Philippi (hence the Book of Philippians). This point or message is that as believers we must be of the same mindset, not only the same as each other but the same as our Lord Jesus Christ.

Why is this important?

We all have faced division, we all have faced tension that arises when others think or act differently from what we want. The greatest of friendships, or relationships have been severed due to different perspectives, visions or desires.

Why does this Happen?

Philippians 2:4

Let each of you look out not only for his own interest, but also for the interests of others.

Sometimes we can become so headstrong, prideful, stubborn or what have you towards our personal convictions, desires or wants that we create division. This division can lead to separation, which can lead to a whole slew of trouble, like bitterness, hate, anger, slander, malice etc.

So whats the solution!?

The solution is to be of the same mind. If we have repented(acknowledged, and daily work at turning)  from our sins, and we also have believed and confessed in what Jesus Christ did on the Cross, and also that He rose from the dead. Then we are believers of Jesus Christ, we are saved and therefore have not only the same spirit (the Spirit of God) living within us, and we have the mind of Christ.

How do we apply this?

Once you have the mind of Christ you are to let it rule within you. It takes constant practice and work. We naturally think of self first. We don’t have to go looking for the  mind of Christ, we have it already when we  become one in Christ.

So what we have to do it put aside all opinions, preexisting beliefs, and thoughts. This will also take constant work and practice. We must pick up God’s Word. We need His Word on our hearts. We must not lean on our own thoughts…

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

…we have to lean on what God’s Holy Inspired Word says.

We can never be of the same mind of other believers if we hang on to our personal beliefs, and opinions. They will destroy us and separate us from what God wants to do through and around our lives.

Who cares what your opinion is, no one cares; rather, what does God’s Eternal Word say…

Amen!!! I like that last part. So many times we get caught up in our opinions rather than just looking at what the Bible says.
