Walk in the Light of the LORD

December 8, 2013

Ephesians 5:6-15 NLT

6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. 7 Don’t participate in the things these people do. 8 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. 12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. 13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,

“Awake, O sleeper,
    rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

This is a powerful passage that really spoke to my heart last night as I read it. There are a few things I wanted to point out in this passage in hopes to strengthen and sharpen us in our walks.

God’s Word clearly declares multiple times that darkness and light can have no part in each other. So apart from a life in Christ, according to the Bible, you are living in darkness. When you are living in Christ and Christ lives in you, you are now a child of the light (John 15:4; Ephesians 5: 8).

The key to knowing this, is been able to expose any darkness in your life. Only you and God know the true condition of your heart. We can always put on a good show, some of us are better at it than others. But nonetheless it can be a show. But here the Apostle Paul gives us several steps for application.

Verse 11 says; take no part in worthless deeds, or in the NKJV, it says have no fellowship with unfruitful works of darkness…but here is the kicker it’s not that we just don’t take part in it, We are to EXPOSE them! Bring them into the light.

How? Well depending on what that darkness is, we either confess to our wives if applicable, or to a Christian Brother that will love you and hold you accountable, or whatever is pressing on your heart.

The second powerful step is to be careful how you live, or in the NKJV it says to see that you walk circumspectly. In other words, really analyze your heart, your intentions, and your deeds, all of them. Are they really filled with the Light of the Lord? As verse 6 says, don’t be fooled, or try to excuse sin, if there is any type of excuse or justification to conform it in our minds we are walking in dangerous territory.

Search your Heart,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, and in all your ways acknowledge HIM, and He shall direct paths!! (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Thank you LORD for bringing us out of darkness and into the light of your love, mercy and grace. Give us knowledge to discern what is acceptable to you LORD and give us strength to walk in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. In Jesus’ name amen.
