An Offer and A Promise

December 4, 2013

John 16:33

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

In our Bible Study last night we went through John 16. It was a great time, as we were able to read a powerful chapter with some of the closing commands and statements of Jesus preparing His disciples for the cross.

In this verse Jesus says three very profound things:

The first is that “you may have peace”. The key word in this statement is ‘may’. Peace is not guaranteed nor promised by Our Lord Jesus. Today the world seeks peace, everyone wants personal and global peace. But the King of Kings does not promise it, He just states that we can attain it.

The second statement is, “you will have tribulation”. Now this is a promise, the Words of God are bomb-proof and eternal, so what may just seem like casual talk to the naked ear is a bold declaration, statement and promise. We must understand, that trials are to come, we will face loss; whether physical, financial, or even to loss of loved ones. These are great trials and tribulations.

But then Jesus says: “I have overcome the world”. Wow, this is a concept so big and difficult to grasp in our finite minds. But basically what speaks to my heart is that anything that is challenging in this world, Jesus speaks to my heart and says, don’t worry Son, I have conquered this, just follow me, be of good cheer and I will pull you through.

Friends, don’t seek peace. Seek Jesus. Don’t seek answers to your problems, Seek Jesus. Let Him be the center of you life, and then will you receive the Peace that Passes all Understanding (Philippians 4:7)
