hä-mär-tä’-nō

Acts 3:19

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord…

I recently heard a sermon about sin. By definition many of us probably look at sin as just bad things, or when we or others do bad things. Today’s world, culture and society says that bad is relative, relative to the person and the persons affected by certain actions. This is a very dangerous way to live, because everything becomes subjective to every individual thought, belief or idea.
However as Christians we are to not only believe in the whole counsel of God, but to live it and align our lives by it. We are to stand on absolute truth.

Why do you think in Proverbs 3:5-6 says:

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And Lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

It’s foolishness to lean on your own understanding, by nature we operate under the flesh, the carnal nature of our body and thoughts. This, many times leads us into sin, which the word sin, is derived from the Greek word; hamartanō. Here is the definition from Blue Letter Bible:

hamartanō – hä-mär-tä’-nō –

  1. to be without a share in

  2. to miss the mark

  3. to err, be mistaken

  4. to miss or wander from the path of uprightness and honor, to do or go wrong

  5. to wander from the law of God, violate God’s law, sin

Whats does this mean for me and you? It means that when we live a life of sin, when our sin is habitual in nature, when we give in to every lustful, selfish desire we begin walking next to or into some type of sinful act. Why is this so bad? To sum up the above definition…

Sin is falling short of God’s plan and destiny for your life.

Your choosing something other than the best path God has for your life.
