Get Equipped : Blaspheming the Holy Spirit

October 29, 2013

Continuing on in our Get Equipped series. The Book Essentials, by Pastor Greg Laurie is our basis for these teachings. All quotations are from his book.

To get caught up in this series, go to Insulting the Holy Spirit

We will cover six sins that believers, or Christians can commit against the Holy Spirit. When you become a Christian the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, and begins to guide and help you, the Bible calls Him our counselor. But we must also know that the Holy Spirit living inside of us is God in Spirit.

This is our final post in this series. Hope you learned, and grew and now you are applying those things!

Matthew 12:31-32 NLT

31 “So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.

There is some amazing truth in the above verse.

EVERY SIN can be forgiven! That’s great news, because if you believe you are a sinner, and you believe you need a savior named Jesus to forgive you and cleanse you of your sins, its nice to know that no matter what foolishness, or wickedness you have done in the past it all can be forgiven if we just repent and believe.

But, according to this verse there is one sin that can never be forgiven, Blaspheme of the Holy Spirit.

I recently listened to a sermon on this, and Pastor Chuck Smith, was mentioning how people ask him about this a lot. Many have been worried whether or not they have committed the “unpardonable sin” of blaspheme of the Holy Spirit. He said something along the lines, that if your concerned enough to be asking, you haven’t done it. Pretty comforting!

Pastor Greg says in His book; “To blaspheme the Spirit means to reject the work the Spirit has come to do, which is to bring us to Christ…These are the people who simply live their lives the way they want to live, allowing their hearts to become harder and harder as the days, weeks, and years slip by.” (pg. 74, Essentials)

This has been something stirring my heart, as I try to share God’s Love and Gospel with those around me, their constant rejection of His works breaks my heart for them. As I have been learning through this study and other teachings, is that the more an individual rejects Christ, the more his heart will become hardened against the work of God’s Spirit. Until one day, the heart will be to hardened, to calloused and their resistance of the Spirit will turn to insults, and into blaspheme.

That’s why God says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Today is the day of Salvation.” If you are not saved, if you have never confessed Jesus as your Lord and Savior, I want to encourage you do to so today. Nobody is promised tomorrow. Do not let pride and procrastination rob you of eternal life with Jesus Christ. Jesus says in Mark 1, to Repent and Believe. Repent or turn from your sins, Believe that He died for your sins, and rose from the dead. Ask Him to come into your heart, and He will. Jesus says in Revelation 3; “…I stand at the door and knock…”. He is, and has been standing at the door of your heart, like a true gentleman, just waiting for you to put down the cares, worries and pursuits of this world and turn to Him.

Life in Christ is complete. Have you been searching for something? Do you feel empty after all those worldly pursuits you have? That search for something that gives you peace in your soul, will be over. We were created to search for something to fill that need in our hearts. That something is Jesus Christ.

  1. I was glad to read this. Holy Spirit is my best friend and He is an awesome teacher as well. I agree when you said He is a gentleman. Holy Spirit is absolutely a gentleman and I have found this to be true so many times. I learned early on in my Christian life, that He waits for us to invite him in to our prayer time and quiet time. Now, I always ask Him to help me pray and help me worship. He truly is a person and the third person of the Trinity. Good read. Blessings.
