Get Equipped : Insulting the Holy Spirit

October 26, 2013

Continuing on in our Get Equipped series. The Book Essentials, by Pastor Greg Laurie is our basis for these teachings. All quotations are from his book.

To get caught up in this series, go to Resisting the Holy Spirit

We will cover six sins that believers, or Christians can commit against the Holy Spirit. When you become a Christian the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, and begins to guide and help you, the Bible calls Him our counselor. But we must also know that the Holy Spirit living inside of us is God in Spirit.

Hebrews 10:29 NLT

Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us.

This verse seemed complex to me at first glance, but as I read through, it slowly tells me that what Jesus did was so magnificent, holy and righteous that words really cannot express it completely. So amazing, that if I treat it any other way, and ignore this act of mercy towards my soul that the Holy Spirit is trying to press on my heart I am insulting the Holy Spirit and the punishment waiting for me if I do not repent will be great.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been and will always be the most controversial topic, until Jesus returns in Glory. Why? There are many reasons why, but underneath the many deep answers that could be given, it just seems to fairy tale, to easy to just believe and then your saved. That’s why many religions or faith-based systems have gotten caught up with so many legalistic works in order to try to secure their personal salvation. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

God Almighty just wants us to believe in what His Son did, then and only then can we receive His mercy by not getting what we deserve for our sin, we can also receive His Grace, where we are getting what we don’t deserve.

What we need to realize is that to reject the message or “Gospel” of Jesus Christ is to insult the Holy Spirit. Why is this an insult? Or why is this such a big deal? Because God is Spirit, and the Holy Spirit of God, has one mission, that mission is to lead us into the truth and saving Grace of Jesus Christ. “But if you reject Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, you are insulting the Holy Spirit, and you are resisting Him. And this can lead to the sixth sin on our list.”  (pg. 74 Essentials)

The last part of Hebrews 10:29 caught my attention. How do we obtain mercy from God? From the Holy Spirit. It says the Holy Spirit brings God’s mercy to us. If we don’t believe in the Holy Spirit, and therefore Christ himself, we don’t obtain mercy from God. Pretty heavy.

    • Wow! Missed that one brother, super cool!! Thank u for sharing that!!
