Get Equipped : Quenching the Holy Spirit

October 20, 2013

Continuing on in our Get Equipped series. The Book Essentials, by Pastor Greg Laurie is our basis for these teachings.

To get caught up in this series, go to Grieving the Holy Spirit.

We will cover six sins that believers, or Christians can commit against the Holy Spirit. When you become a Christian the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, and begins to guide and help you, the Bible calls Him our counselor. But we must also know that the Holy Spirit living inside of us is God in Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:19

Do not quench the Spirit.

The word quench seems to primarily refer to suppressing or extinguishing fire. The Holy Spirit is illustrated and referenced as fire several times throughout the Bible. So to quench the Holy Spirit is to suppress or extinguish His fire that He wants to burn in you.

Pastor Greg, in His book Essentials gives us two ways that we can quench the Holy Spirit, ignoring His prompting to share, and ignoring the changes in your life that need to be made.

Have you ever felt prompted to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with someone? Did you ignore that prompting, and did  you find 10 reasons why it is not necessary, or not the right time or place? If you have been a Christian for even a short period of time, the answer to these questions is probably yes. We all have been guilty of this.

Or has the Spirit of God every called you out on something in your life that needs to change? Maybe you’re in some type of sin right now, or maybe you’re doing something that could lead you down a dangerous path…but you keep ignoring that quiet voice telling you to repent. You ignore because you have decided, and rationalized that you’re not willing to give that up and change.

Well dear friends, these are both dangerous situations for us as Christians. By continuing on in this way, we are quenching the Holy Spirit. We are suppressing and even extinguishing His power. God has chosen Him to be revealed through us, God wants us to partner with Him. But it takes obedience. The more we quench God’s Spirit the harder it will be to hear Him, we will drift farther and farther away; until we either completely walk away from God, or we will have to fight back through all the damage of disobedience and re-dedicate our lives back to Him.

It is hard many times to follow Jesus, but Jesus never promised smooth sailing for those that choose to follow Him. But He did promise an abundant life. He promised the peace that passes all understanding, and He promises eternal life when we put our faith in Him. So keep fighting the good fight of faith, it is so worth it!

For those of you reading this that are not Christians, or are not totally solid in what you believe yet, this Holy Spirit stuff may sound super weird but the Word of God has many examples to make this very clear for you. So, stay tuned, the next post on the Holy Spirit will really impact you and may change the way you view Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and the Holy Spirit.
