Get Equipped: Grieving the Holy Spirit

October 17, 2013

Continuing on in our Get Equipped series. The Book Essentials, by Pastor Greg Laurie is our basis for these teachings. All quotations are from his book.

To get caught up in this series, go to Lying to the Holy Spirit.

We will cover six sins that believers, or Christians can commit against the Holy Spirit. When you become a Christian the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, and begins to guide and help you, the Bible calls Him our counselor. But we must also know that the Holy Spirit living inside of us is God in Spirit.

Sin #2 – Grieving the Holy Spirit

“The word grieve means to make sad or sorrowful – to bring sadness to the Holy Spirit. What makes the Holy Spirit sad and sorrowful?(pg.69 Essentials)”

Ephesians 4:29-32 NLT

29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[a] guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

There are four categories of ways that we can grieve the Holy Spirit, all of them are referenced in the above verse:

  • Foul and Abusive Language

We must be diligent and intentional about our language. For some it seems impossible, but it’s not, we all are capable of controlling our tongues around children, people we look up to, and in formal situations; right? To make it permanent, get to the source: The Heart. Our hearts need to be cleaned, the Bible says we are cleansed by the washing of the Word (Ephesians 5:26), that’s Gods Word, that when applied to our lives we will be cleansed of our filthiness.

Luke 6:45

For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  • Bitterness

“Bitterness means an embittered and resentful spirit that refuses to be reconciled. (pg. 69 Essentials)”

Bitterness stems from pride, it can stem from previous hurt or pain. If your not sure of bitterness in your heart, do you complain of your dissatisfaction of people, or things in your life? Are you very critical of others and nitpicky? Are you looking for arguments, conflict?

“Don’t live this way! It makes the Spirit sad. Why? Because if you let bitterness go unchecked, it naturally leads you to the next thing that grieves His heart. (pg. 70 Essentials)”

  • Fits of Rage and Uncontrolled Anger

We all know what this is. Im sure no one enjoys getting to this level, the bummer is some of us are here often. Work on the heart, which works on the bitterness, which will help your control. Don’t grieve the Spirit of God in this way.

  • Slander and Malice

“Slander speaks of saying evil things about others behind their backs. Malice speaks of ill will – even to the point of plotting evil against someone. (pg. 70 Essentials)”

Pastor Greg gives us an acronym here to help us apply biblical principles in conversation, so we can live tenderhearted and forgiving towards others…even when it’s really hard!

T – Truthful, let everything you say be true, first hand accounts with all the facts

H – Helpful, am I going to help this person, or tear someone down?

I – Inspiring, is this inspiring?

N – Necessary, Is this really necessary?

K – Kind, is this really kind, or am I justifying it for kindness?

” You say, ‘Greg, if I apply that acronym, I may never say anything again!’ Amen. So be it. Maybe you can start using your mouth for what it was created for: to glorify God, honor Him, build up your brothers and sisters, and preach the Good News to those who don’t know Jesus. (pg. 71 Essentials)”
