Are You a Foot Washer?

October 8, 2013

John 13: 4, 5, 12

…rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself…He poured water into a basin…So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again…

This chapter is going to be covered in our next Bible Study session, but I wanted to give a sneak peek.

John 13, starts with whats known as the ‘Last Supper’ between Jesus and His disciples. One of the many things that made this occasion so special was when the King of Kings and Lord of Lords humbles himself to the lowest role of their culture, a foot washer. Jesus does this to illustrate many things, not only to these disciples that were present, but also to us today. Not so much to remember this as a religious practice to copy, but rather to embody this in the way we live, act and treat others.

John 13:15

For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”

The play-by-play below was copied from a commentary on Blue Letter Bible, by Pastor David Guzik:

– Jesus rose from supper, a place of rest and comfort

– Jesus rose from His throne in heaven, a place of rest and comfort

– Jesus laid aside His garments, taking off His covering

– Jesus laid aside His glory, taking off His heavenly covering

– Jesus took a towel and girded Himself, being ready to work

– Jesus took the form of a servant, and came ready to work

– Jesus poured water into a basin, ready to clean

– Jesus poured out His blood to cleanse us from the guilt and penalty of sin

– Jesus sat down again (John 13:12) after washing their feet

– Jesus sat down at the right hand of God the Father after cleansing us

Go here for full commentary.

Jesus, Son of God; We love and Praise You above everything in heaven and on earth. Thank you for all You are and all You have done for us. Thank you that your Blood cleanses us, and that all You ask of us, is to believe in You and what You have done for us, and to love You with all of our heart, all of our mind, and all of our strength. Through You all things were created, and through you all things will come to pass.

In your heavenly name, the name above all names, Jesus, Amen!
