Lets Get the Essentials

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord,…

theology-matters

I started reading a book this morning titled, Essentials; written by Greg Laurie. This book is designed and written to build upon the truth’s of God’s Word. My goal, as I read through this book is to share what I learn, and the important biblical truths we all need to know and stand on.

In this first section of Chapter I, Theology is discussed. Theology is the study of God’s nature, and or His Word, the Bible.

The verse above says we must reason together, we are not to reason off of emotion, and experiences, because we will end up becoming lost and confused. Pastor Greg translates the above verse as this:

“Let’s get this right. Get this straightened out in your mind. Understand these things. We need to think and act biblically rather than emotionally.” He also informs us that we must become students of His Word, we must become theology students in order to understand God based on truth not emotions.

“C.S. Lewis gave this warning years ago: ‘If you do not listen to theology, that will not mean you have no ideas about God. It will mean you have a lot of wrong ones.'”

So what do we do in the process of studying God’s Word? We follow what the Apostle Paul writes:

1 Timothy 4:16 (NIV)

Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

In our society and culture today there are so many different doctrines, beliefs and systems of so-called spirituality that we must watch closely. I have personally heard people with a customized Jesus. A Jesus that fits into the kind of life they are choosing to live by. God says you are either for Him or against Him, there is no in between with God.

So as Pastor Greg Laurie says in Essentials:

“Let’s make sure we are worshiping the right God as He is presented to us in the pages of Scripture.”

I love the intimacy of God in Isaiah 1:18. We are so blessed to worship a God who loves us and wants a personal relationship with us.
