Work Towards Generosity

September 13, 2013

John 12:8

“For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

This verse has always confused me, I never fully understood what the actual interpretation was of this passage, but I wanted to share one of the many applications I feel verses 1-8 has for us.

In brief, this passage describes Mary anointing the feet of Jesus with expensive oil, to prepare Him for His burial that was going to be coming soon.

Two verses came to my heart that I feel relate to us today when it comes to being servants of Jesus, or rather stewards of the resources God has blessed us with.

The first is Matthew 25:40

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.

Scripture is very clear that when we do things out of the goodness of our hearts God sees these things. When we do acts of love and kindness for the Glory of God there is a ripple effect that can never be measured or felt in this life.

The second connection is in Proverbs 3:27-28

27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it,” When you have it with you.

This verse has so many applications, to keep things simple; this verse points right at the selfish nature of man. When our actions reflect a heart of generosity, and a lack of concern for our own selfish interests we give God Glory, and we expose our hearts to grow in Love.

These two examples are to point us towards trusting God in all things. When we can get to a point where we view “ours” as God’s; we start to open our heart and ways to be more conformed to the generosity that Jesus Christ showed in His ultimate sacrifice for us.

Actions speak louder than words. If we see someone in need and we are capable of helping them, and we don’t, but rather just talk about it, as Proverbs 3:27-28 states, do not withhold good to those to whom it is due. God not only looks at our hearts but He wants to see action on our part. He wants us to shine forth the love of Christ and the way to do that is through our actions.

    • Love your neighbor as yourself, how amazing is this commandment. When you break it down it is so simplistic, so real and so vivid, yet so difficult to fulfill all the time.
