What’s your Idols?

August 27, 2013

1 John 5:21

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

As I was finishing up this chapter this morning, this verse really jumped out at me. One, because it kind of came out of nowhere, two, closing statements are always important. The two combined led me into prayer and I wanted to share what God has stirred in my heart.

Reading the Old Testament can give us the illusion that idol worship was only for those worshiping statues, images, and items of gold and silver. But we must understand that idol worship has not gone anywhere, but rather it has transformed. I wanna challenge you in this post, and have you look honestly, and deeply into your own heart, mind and life and see where idol worship has taken place.

Colossians 3:5 NLT

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

If you take a look at the list of idol worship in the verse above, everything is selfish in nature. All those desires seek to only please yourself, with a ripple effect of damage to those involved, either knowingly or un-knowingly.

Sometimes we can even disguise, justify or water down our idol worship so that we think we have convinced ourselves it’s okay, the problem is we have to keep doing that because our guilty conscience or for some the Holy Spirit is convicting you. This may come in the form of keeping a perfect house or yard in the name of cleanliness but instead it’s a pride/idol thing now, being career driven to provide for your family that turns into status and power to uphold, working out for health reasons that turns into staring at yourself in the mirror constantly or deserting your family so you look good, trying to share your wisdom or knowledge in a subject your strong in that leads to always needing to air your opinion to boast your knowledge and so-called wisdom and talking way more than you listen.

God is very clear throughout the Bible about idol worship many times over; so guard yourself from it (James 1:26), and if it’s to late flee from it (1 Corinthians 10:14)!

Exodus 20:4-5

4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods…

My friends, the desires of this life are so temporary, and they are not worth it. Seek God with all your heart, seek the things which are above and set your mind on it. Nothing and No one can top God’s Retirement Plan!!

  1. Sorry for being so hard on you. WordPress allows edits to the title. I sometimes have to edit mine.

You are right. So many things can become idols. A lot of times we do think of idols as good things that become idols to us (such as careers, knowledge, house, boat, family, etc.). But things that are bad from the start, such as anger, sexual immorality, drunkenness, etc., can also be idols. Anything that makes us turn away from the living God.

I like your blog, and I have been following it. This is another good post. 🙂

    • Hahaha no problem my friend. As Im sure you know we cant be soft and sensitive Christians, we would be to ineffective with bitterness and hurt. 😜

You are right though, anything that makes us turn from our Lord, even if its just a little bit everyday, it will take its toll without repentance.

Thank you for your support and encouragement! Blessings to you!

  2. Kyle Idelman wrote a good book on this topic- gods at war. Great post, and Aloha from the Great White North!

    • Awesome, thank you so much I will have to look into that!

And thank you for the encouragement, aloha to you too, aye!

I love the fact that God is a jealous God for us and won’t tolerate our affection for anything else above Him. What an amazing Father we have!!!

    • At first that used to confuse me cause i used to think He doesnt want us being jealous…? But as Ive learned more of the personality of God it all makes sense!!
