To remain as One

July 23, 2013

John 8:31-33

31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”33 “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”

I wanted to share a verse that was discussed in our home Bible Study last night. This verse was taken from the NLT Bible. Right now lets focus on the word ‘remain’; in verse 31. Depending on what version your Bible is you may see the word remain, abide, continue, hold or anything else along these lines.

The Greek root word for these words is meno. There are obviously several definitions for this word, but the one that was most pertinent to this case stated:

In reference to a state or condition: to remain as one, not become another or different. This definition was  taken Blue Letter Bible, for full definition and pronunciation go here.

So what Jesus is saying is we must remain as one with Him. We must submit ourselves to His Word. We must humble ourselves to His Word. We must turn from our selfish ways and desire and seek to live a life that reflects the earthly life and ministry of Jesus.

Verse 33 shows how the religious leaders of that time had it all twisted. They felt entitled to the promises God spoke to Abraham. They felt that because they were descendants of Abraham, the “seed” God spoke of in Genesis 22:18 was them. But sadly they were wrong. This “seed” was not a physical seed but rather a spiritual seed.

It breaks my heart that this mindset is still prevalent today among Christians. We feel that verses like John 3:16 give us a free pass, to live, talk and act in any way we want, if we just believe. We abuse the Spirit of Grace by thinking and living with this type of mindset. For those of us that operate in this way we are almost as bad as the people in Jesus’s time that denied the Grace and Mercy Jesus brought with His ministry.

If this speaks to you, get your heart right with God. The groundwork for getting right with God is simple:

Fear God. For as Proverb 1:7 says; The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.

Submit to God. James 4:7 says; Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Cleanse Yourself. James 4:8; Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Lastly, Humble Yourself. James 6, 10; But He gives grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

Fear the Lord with Holy reverence; submit yourselves to Him; cleanse your heart, mind and body from sin; and humble yourself.
