Faith like Abraham

July 19, 2013

Genesis 22:12

“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”

While reading the other day this message was placed on my heart about the Faith of Abraham. For those of you that dont know the story of Abraham called to sacrifice his son Isaac, I encourage to read it. Its amazing (Genesis 22).

There are several things that took place from this transaction between God Almighty and Abraham.

  1. God tested Abraham. 22:2 – “Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
  2. Abraham obeyed God. 22:3, 22:10 – The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac.; And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice.
  3. God blesses Abraham. 22:16-18 –  16 “This is what the Lord says: Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that 17 I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. 18 And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me.”

Lets look at a few of the many things this story illustrates.

Abraham’s faith in God’s Love and promises had no restrictions or boundaries. Abraham patiently waited till he was 100 years old before God opened His wife Sarah’s womb and blessed them with a son.

Rather than blame God for 100 years of criticism, shame and discontent; He faithfully served God and loved others (Genesis 12-22).

This type of love has no restrictions.

This type of Love doesn’t look at external circumstances.

This type of Love only looked forward to the promises of God.

God spoke to Abraham, that His descendants would be greater than the stars in the sky before the birth of Isaac (Genesis 15:5). Abraham believed in this, his faith was counted to him as righteousness (Romans 4:3).

God’s Word, the Bible is for us. Every promise in their, is for you and me. When we apply Abraham’s type of faith to our relationships, to our circumstances, and life; we have to believe that God is faithful and just. That God wants the best in our lives.

We must get in His Word. Learn His Word. Learn His promises so that we can lean on them. When money is tight, God says: dont worry (Matthew 6). When you have failed, God says: I have plans to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). When you feel unworthy because of sin, God says: that if you believe in my son you will have eternal life (John 3:16).

Put God’s Word deep in your heart. Dont doubt it, dont waver on it. God’s Word is life.
