Mercy and Truth

July 4, 2013

Proverbs 3:3-4

3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, 4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.

Reading through the book of Proverbs is so amazing and powerful. Adding a chapter a day every month (31 chapters in Proverbs) onto your reading plan, or devotion time has staggering results to your heart and spirit.

This verse jumped out at me last night. I have been battling some things in my own heart when I came across those two words mercy and truth. We all have countless situations that cross our paths, where we have an actual decision to show mercy, or to deny mercy. This may come off in our physical actions, or it can actually take place in our hearts.

Then we have truth, nothing is more powerful than the truth. When the truth in any matter gets destroyed everything becomes lost, such as: friendships, marriages, jobs, integrity, reputation.

This verse says ‘bind them around your neck’, that visual is powerful for me I know personally if something is around my neck I feel it constantly, I need to adjust it constantly making me very conscious and aware of whats around my neck. I believe this verse is telling us to; have mercy and truth that a part of your lives, where you are constantly thinking of it and applying it to every facet of your life, either in word or deed.

‘Write them on the tablet of your heart’ ; as we all know our hearts have an amazing ability to love with unconditional limits; like the love of a child. There is no limit to the amount of love we can have. Our hearts also are capable of immense hate and disgust. Our hearts seem totally connected to our minds in that they record and keep track of things that are good for us or hurt us. Kinda of like a tablet.  I believe this verse wants us to intentionally record mercy and truth to our hearts. Write it in there, keep it there and do not forsake it.

The Bible is very clear that the human heart is wicked, which means mercy and truth do not come natural. We must remind ourselves of it, we must practice it, we must desire it and apply it. Even when the results do not and will not acknowledge it, be faithful to it.

‘Finding favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man’ is far more valuable than anything the world can offer.
