When I say…

This was a poem I heard recently by our Mayor, Billy Kenoi at a Prayer Breakfast held this April in Honolulu. Im not a big poem guy but this poem was really heart felt and spoke to my heart, as I hope it speaks to yours.

As human beings we are all flawed. So when we become Christians we are still flawed, with a different Spirit living inside of us. When you say you are a Christian you are held to a different standard, all eyes are on you and at your next failure all thoughts and words can come flooding down on you that you are a hypocrite, a bigot, a fake and so on. But for all of you that have no problems accepting your flaws, and no problems accepting your imperfection, please enjoy this poem, and may the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob richly Comfort, Strengthen, and Bless your Heart.

The true author of this poem is uncertain according to Mayor Kenoi, the credits go to either Maya Angelou, or Carol Wimmer.

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not shouting, “I’ve been saved!”
I’m whispering, “I get lost sometimes
That’s why I chose this way”

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I don’t speak with human pride
I’m confessing that I stumble –
needing God to be my guide

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not trying to be strong
I’m professing that I’m weak
and pray for strength to carry on

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not bragging of success
I’m admitting that I’ve failed
and cannot ever pay the debt

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I don’t think I know it all
I submit to my confusion
asking humbly to be taught

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I’m not claiming to be perfect
My flaws are far too visible
but God believes I’m worth it

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartache
which is why I seek God’s name

When I say, “I am a Christian”
I do not wish to judge
I have no authority
I only know I’m loved
