Let there be lights in the firmaments…

June 13, 2013

Genesis 1:14-19

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

As we discussed in the previous passage, God created the grass, herbs and trees before the sun. On the fourth day of creation God creates the sun to sustain the plant life and world that has already been created. This actually reminds me of times in my life where God has asked me to step out in faith, not necessarily having all the tools, time, wisdom or knowledge that I would like to have. But as I have stepped out in faith God has always come to my aid, providing the grace and support necessary to sustain whatever action necessary. God’s miraculous design in things are never by accident, His plan and purpose are far greater than our understanding.

The creation and design of the stars in the heavens are absolutely amazing. Not only are they amazing to watch, they are amazingly configured for navigation, signs, seasons, days and years. The thing that truly baffles me, is how did ancient generations figure this out? For example the Polynesian people of the pacific navigated large bodies of water by the stars, way before any maps or electronics. Way before any civilized people came to educate them in this science. Im reminded of what is said in

Ecclesiastes 3:11, that “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts…”

God has placed His eternal desire on every heart, He has placed a desire for greater and bigger things all around us like the stars of the sky.

It’s absolutely amazing to think of how God created the sun (greater light), and the moon (lesser light), and the stars in such perfect balance. In order to sustain life on earth God has created a world so complex and fragile that scientist are still searching the depths of this knowledge to figure it out. It is so amazing and unfathomable that many scientist adamantly do not believe in creation. God has created earth with over 30 important factors necessary for a safe, life-sustaining environment, like the axis tilt, rotation period, star location, galaxy type, magnetic field and so on. Stuff that we just take for granted in our daily lives, God has already designed and perfected in order for us to live on this planet.

“And God saw that it was good”.
