Be Still and Know…

June 4, 2013

Psalms 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

Within this ministry we have men of all different levels in their walks. Everything from curious and hurting non-believers, to thirty year soldiers in Christ. So this may not speak to all of you, for some of you this is a normal behavior, for others you have never heard of this. But this morning during my devotion time, as I was praying for this group of men God impressed upon my heart to share this verse with you guys and add some practical steps to it.

Christianity is different from every other religion because the primary focus and goal is to develop a personal relationship with God. God is our heavenly Father, when we surrender our lives to Him we become adopted children into this family of faith. As an adopted son we need to get to know our Father, He already knows us, in fact He knew us before we were born (Psalm 139). Growing in our walk with Christ is about building our personal relationship with Him.

With any relationship it is two-way. If all we did was talk to our wives or friends without listening to them, our relationship would struggle, big time. With God, if all we do is ask for this, ask for that; then when does God speak? Sometimes we need to Be Still, and hear God speak to our hearts.

In all honesty this takes a lot of practice if you have never tried it. One reason is the devil will try to flood your thoughts and distract you. But stay faithful to this, keep trying, keep clearing your mind. I personally say this verse over and over, slowly: “Be still and know that I am God, Be still and know that I am God, Thank you Jesus, Thank you Jesus, Be still and know that I am God”. That’s kind of what I have to do when my thoughts race. Try your best not to pray, sometimes I catch myself praying for things. Don’t pray, just Be still and listen.

So I want to challenge all of you, if you’re not doing this wake up a few minutes earlier. Get a pad and a pen, write the date, go somewhere that doesn’t have a lot of distractions, close your eyes, then Be still and know(listen). Do this for five minutes. Just give it a shot, it may feel weird, it will be hard for some of you, but be faithful in it, try every day. The rewards are amazing. Also don’t be impatient, it may take time. Believe in your heart, and know that He longs for us to sit in His presence.

I would also love to hear of your success or even your trials in this. If you like please share with me.

  1. Thank you. Yes, this verse came way before the whole “stay calm and …” quotes
