“Let the earth bring forth grass…”

June 1, 2013

Genesis 1:11-13

11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 So the evening and the morning were the third day.

Thank you Blue Letter Bible, and the commentary by Pastor David Guzik that made this passage so enlightening and easy to understand.

If your like me, maybe you read through this chapter several times and never realized the most simple, mind bending miracle. As most of us understand, in order for plants to live, grow and thrive; one of the main things they need is sunlight. However according to the history of creation here in Genesis 1, God has not yet created the sun.

In verse 3, God created light and saw that it was good. We must now realize even more so, that this light was not from the sun, it was a supernatural light. Just as Revelation 21:23 teaches us about the New Heaven, or New Jerusalem as it’s referred to:

The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.

So we can see here that in order for God to create the grass, the herb, the fruit tree and the seeds necessary for these plants to thrive and grow; He did not rely on the science that He actually created to sustain it. But rather these things were created by the power and majesty of His Word.

If we believe that God raised His son Jesus from the dead, and we believe that Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. Why can’t we believe in the same Power to create fully mature plants, grass and trees supernaturally by the Power of His Word?

God not only created these things, but He created them to reproduce according to their kind. God creates things to have variations in their kind, but never for one kind to develop into another kind. Because as God saw that it was good, that means there is no need to change it.

We must remember as magnificent and beautiful as the world, plants and animals are around us they are not the objects in which we worship. God almighty is the primary and only source worthy of worship. We must remember to live in a way, and speak in a way where we worship the creator, rather than the creation.

I have read through this verse probably a hundred times and never caught how God created the grass, plants, herbs and trees BEFORE he created the sun. Thanks for pointing that out brother K (no matter how many times you read through the Bible, you learn something new everytime. I love it). Something had to sustain these plants and trees. Something had to feed them and nourish them. You’re right, it would be nothing other than the light and glory of God!!!! Which would be Jesus Christ himself. Just like we need the light of Christ in our lives to shine forth from us, so to do all other living and breathing things that God has created. At the time God created the plants and trees, just like you point out in Revelation 21:23, there was no need for the sun or the moon b/c the plants were sustained by the glory of the LORD. In John 1:1-5, it talks about how “in Him (Jesus Christ) was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” Verse 9 goes on to say “that was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” So we see here in John how Jesus is the “true light” and since “all things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (see John 1-3), the “true light” that shines forth from Jesus Christ sustains all life on the earth.
