Then God said, “Let the waters…”

May 28, 2013

Genesis 1:9-10

9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

This verse and all the other verses of this chapter could create debates that last for hours, we could also read articles and books for days on end with all the scientific data proving one thing against another. But my goal is to keep it simple, and bring a little bit more clarity to the miracles God spoke to life when His earthly creation took place.

According to the verse above we obviously have another environment that would not be sustainable to life. So God just gathered all the waters together in one place, then had dry land appear, that’s it. Sounds pretty simple, but scientifically that is very complicated and these actions must have had tremendous ripple effects.

From what I understand, today land is formed by magma, or molten hot lava. It spews out of a source, cools, hardens and continues to build upon itself. However basically God did this in a moments notice, by His Word. God also raised the land, and according to scripture there is no clear distinction that there were separate continents at this time. So it’s safe to assume that this one large giant land mass was raised, rather than individual continents. Talk about a massive surge of water rushing off of the surface of land, probably creating many of the valleys, trenches and canyons we have today.

If your like me and wondering what happened to this land mass, was it really one continent, and why isn’t the Bible more clear on this? Well, we cannot deny the existence of plate tectonics. So in time God allowed the shifting of plates and surfaces to break up this land mass into what we now know the earths surface to be. Also the results of the flood (Genesis 7) had tremendous effects on the earths surfaces, the plates, the crust and everything else involved with these massive systems.

This is a very difficult subject for me to try to keep brief, and to the point, especially since I am far from a scholar on any of these topics. But I hope this has helped clear up a few questions for you, as it has for me. For a more in-depth article on this subject go here: Can Catastrophic Plate Tectonics Explain Flood Geology?

Information was referenced from Blue Letter Bible Commentary by David Guzik in Genesis 1; and Catastrophic Plate Tectonics article by Andrew Snelling.

Well said brother K. It is hard to fathom given our finite minds. But sometimes that’s the beauty of it all. All we have to do is trust in the LORD and believe. We don’t need to sit for years on end trying to figure out exactly how God created the heavens and the earth. If God says He created it, then he created it, period.

    • Right, because His ways are Higher than our ways. How can man figure out all the works of God anyway? He is the One and only God of Wonders!
