Then God said, “Let there be a firmament…”

May 22, 2013

Genesis 1:6-8

Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

This verse was very difficult for me to try to understand it enough to be able to write about it. Which I dont think any human being can fully understand this. Scientist, theologians and Bible scholars can theorize, but to fully visualize and understand this is a bit much.

I read a commentary on Blue Letter Bible by John Calvin about this section of scripture, and he points that this type of activity defies all common sense. John Calvin explains it like the Bible was written for the unlearned. If God described this process in the scientific terms and processes that actually happened no one would understand.

Again this is a situation where faith in God must prevail, we must trust God for His words at face value, and humble ourselves to know that His creating of creation is far greater than we could ever understand. To His glory, He broke it down nice and simple for us; the problem to simple for the skeptics.

But in short what we have here is that the waters of the heavens, and the waters of the earth were one. Obviously this is not a very life-sustaining environment, and God knew that. This firmament, expanse or sky; depending on how you look at it, or how translators defined the hebrew word rakia. Once seperated, a water canopy, in a sense was created allowing all the water, vapor and mist to be gathered in the heavens, and all remaining water to remain as the water of the earth. According to the commentaries I read, this canopy would have provided an amazing blanket of comfort and protection for the entire world. Providing a nice even temperature, lush vegetation and protection from all the harmful rays that bounce down to earth.

However this canopy did not last, neither did worldwide lush vegetation, regulated climates, protection from life shortening rays from space; and so on; this water was used for the great flood of Noah. But maybe more on that another day.

Oh how awesome it will be to someday live in Paradise again. This environment was truly Paradise before sin entered the World. But good news, as believers we will enter that Paradise again. Praise the LORD!!!!
