Then God said, “Let there be light…”

May 18, 2013

Genesis 1:3-5

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

So far in this creation study, we have learned about the beginning of time as we know it. We have also learned about the void and darkness that the world we know, was filled with.

In this post we are going to look at light, and not just any light. For many of us I’m sure the thought of light is the sun, at least it is for me. However this light God created was not the sun (because God doesn’t create the sun until verse 16) , it seems to be a supernatural light, to coincide with the supernatural darkness that was already present.

An example of this supernatural darkness is in Exodus 10.

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

When you really think about that, it is amazing. The more I read that, and try to put myself there I am blown away. This darkness could not even be appeased with artificial light. Verse 23 says they did not see one another. I’m sure they were trying to light torches, or any other artificial light. But the light could not prevail. How can this be?

In a commentary I read by David Guzik, on Blue Letter Bible; he references light as not just a physical property. Light is the aspect of God’s Character. If God wants to pour out judgement by removing His presence, than the void remaining is darkness which can be felt.

1 John 1:5 says:  God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

This type of stuff is totally mind bending. I personally feel that we have to humble ourselves down to a level that we can accept that we will never fully understand God’s Ways in this life. They are to great for us. He is the Great I AM, and we are just His creation. If His Word says He separated the light from the darkness before He even created the sun, then that’s what happened. I don’t understand that fully, I cannot even picture or fathom that. It doesn’t make sense. But I do know my God is a God of miracles. He has no limits and no boundaries.

It makes sense why God tells us to humble ourselves as little children in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 18:2-5).

Loving the posts. Praise the LORD!!! I like that statement by Pastor Guzik that light is the aspect of God’s character. It makes sense when you think about it for God is light as it states in 1 John 1:5. When you come to know God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ His light shines through us. It is a spiritual light that cannot be put out. Darkness cannot prevail. An unbeliever is in spiritual darkness which can only be overcome with the spiritual light of Jesus Christ.

    • Amen, i really liked that too. That verse is amazing, but l it is very convicting for me to read this. It makes me want to constantly strive to rid all darkness from my life. If God lives in me I must constantly purge all evil from my heart.

    • Im glad your loving these posts. There very challenging for me, its way out of my comfort zone. All Glory to God!
