The Earth was without form…

Genesis 1:2

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

The last verse; Genesis 1:1, is very important as Christians to believe, that God did create everything, In the Beginning. However, Im learning that it is very important for us to really try to understand verse 2.

In my little study of this verse I’ve found out that in between verses 1 and 2 something called the gap theory was created. I honestly don’t know much about it, except that it has been proposed and even believed by many that in between verses 1 and 2; millions of years had taken place. I can see how that theory can be assumed, but it doesn’t fit the personality of God. This type of style, or format is not consistent with scripture and how it is delivered throughout the rest of the Bible.

From what I understand the Gap Theory is to explain things like dinosaur bones, and the geological studies that seem to point our earth in the direction of millions of years old. But what we have to believe and understand is that God is a God of miracles, He is a God with no boundaries or limitations. If God wanted to speak the earth into existence already several million years old, it would not be a problem.  Because that is exactly what God did, and I will try to explain this a little more when we talk about God’s actual creation.

When I think of a place without form, void and with a darkness over the face of the deep; I don’t think of a place that sounds to sustainable for life.

When this verse says that the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters, I was trying to meditate on what this could be, and what it could possibly mean and even look like. I almost saw it as God doing thorough homework, kind of like surveying the land before beginning construction. But this was just my own thoughts. However I did read a commentary by David Guzik that referenced this to possibly be God’s Spirit facing resistance from the dark spiritual life that had been cast out of heaven. Either way this doesn’t sound much like a place for any type of human, or animal life. Which really displaces the gap theory.

This means that nothing earthly could have lived or existed prior to God creating it in the later verses. Also, Adam’s sin brought sin into the world, through this initial sin, death as we know it entered also. So there could not be death prior to the sin/death that entered with Adam, which means that we cannot have bones that are millions of years old; Just as Romans 5:12 states:

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Hope this helped, and you learned something.

I looked at Chuck Smith’s (of Calvary Chapel) commentary on this verse on Blue Letter Bible and it is very interesting. He talks about the possibility (and a good one at that) of Satan’s rebellion against God happening between verses 1 and 2 of Genesis. So the timeline would be in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, then Satan’s rebellion occurred which prompted God’s wrath on the earth, and then the earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep as a result of Satan’s rebellioin. So the question then lies in when did God create the angelic beings. Chuck Smith’s commentary on this has the angels existing when God laid the foundations of the world. He points out how in Job 38:4 God says to Job “where were you when I laid the foundations of the world,” and in verse 7 “when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God (or angels) shouted for joy.” So the angels (and thus Satan b/c Satan is a fallen angel) were in existence at the time God created the heavens and the earth b/c they “shouted for joy.”

When Satan entered the garden of eden and tempted Eve in Chapter 3 of Genesis, he had already rebelled against God and fallen from heaven. So it seems to me that Satan’s rebellion against God had to take place between verses 1 and 2 b/c from verses 3 through the start of Chapter 3, God is creating (or possibly re-creating) earth after it was destroyed as a result of Satan’s rebellion. All of this is so interesting and I am by far no Bible scholar on this subject and so I pray that God will reveal himself to us as we go through this study.

Strength & Honor in the LORD!!!!
