Hanging out with Jesus

February 28, 2013

getaway-with-jesusJohn 8:31-32

31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Our Bible Study group is reading the book Man Alive by Patrick Morley. In Chapter 6, there is a section titled ‘A Guy’s Guide to Hanging Out with Jesus’.

I just wanted to share a few points I gathered from the reading, whether we are babes in our faith, or strong pillars, I think there might be a little something for all of us here.

1. Reading God’s Word allows us to know about God, and to experience communion with God.

  • Reading the Bible is literally spending time with the living God
  • the Bible along with prayer, is the gateway to having deeper communion with God
  • the Bible also helps us for discipleship, as we grow and mature in our faith

Why do some Christians stray? It’s because we are not investing ourselves to remain faithful to the teachings of Jesus.

2. Ever read the Bible and been like…huh? Well rest assured you are not alone. That happens to all of us small and great alike. We have to remember what the Prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 55:9:

For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

As Patrick Morley says in his book, ” We get this. We’ve all had to hold back information from someone we didn’t think could handle it…never want a God you can fully explain.”

Those are great ways to look at how vast God is. Our human nature is to try to understand things, but remember God’s ways are so much higher than ours.

3. Making time for God is the key. When we rush our time with Him, we are loosing out on the refreshing benefits God offers our soul.

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29

We have to remember that we are after building a relationship with Jesus, not accomplishing a check off list.
