Nibble of Bread : Finish your Race

January 25, 2013

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This great cloud of witnesses are those that came and went before us, those that have completed their race and our now with the Lord in Glory. They are our bandstand, cheering us on to persevere, to endure, to stay strong, to be holy, pure and blameless in all that we do.

The race we run is a spiritual race, we must understand that the spiritual realm is just as real as the physical world. Obviously it seems weird and akward to even start believing something like that, but the Bible has many examples of this reality (here is one: Ephesians 6:12).

In a marathon the 150 pound man has a tremendous advantage over the 300 pound man. Weight and long distance running do not mix well. The same is living for Jesus Christ. Our sin is baggage, it will trip us up, ensnare us, steer us off course and eventually lead us into quiting the race if we dont remove our sin. However quitting this race has eternal consequences.

We must look to Jesus (verse 2). Jesus is the way truth and the life (John 14:6). Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith (verse 2). In Him we have everything we need to repent of our sins, open our hearts to Him, and surrender our selfish wants and desires (which also leads to sin).

God’s Word is all about Jesus, either directly or indirectly. Spend time in His Word. It takes time, so be patient, lay aside those weights of sin, one by one. Have the endurance and perseverance to not only run a good race, but finish the race with your head held high. Like the true champion that God Almighty has created you to be.
