Nibble of Bread : Treasure of your Heart

January 11, 2013

Luke 6:45

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

This verse was completely irresistible this morning. I could not stop reading it over and over. In fact I had already closed my Bible, when I needed to open it two more times in the hopes that I would not forget this verse today as I wanted to meditate on it all day.

The words: ‘ good treasure of his heart’ , then jumped off the page at me. That brought this verse into a whole new context for me.

There are a lot of things that can go through a mans heart, but what is the treasure of that mans heart? We all have something that we treasure more than other things. I would have to assume comparing with my own heart, thoughts and feelings that we must have compartmentalized treasures. But what is our supreme treasure? What treasure conducts our motives, thoughts, and actions more than any. What treasure over powers our desires? Does our treasure bring forth good fruit, or bad fruit ( Luke 6:43-44)?

The very next passage speaks of Jesus being our Lord, only when we come to Him, hear His sayings, and do them (hearing God’s Word is actually applying His Word in your life). Then and only then do we begin to build our foundation on the Rock of Jesus.

The direction this passage leads me is that if our treasure is not rooted in Jesus, how can we prevail in good fruit? How can the abundance of our heart bring forth good speech, that builds faith rather than destroys?

Look deep into your own heart, what is your treasure? Will it bring forth good fruit that dies when you die? Or will that fruit produce a crop of thirty, sixty or even a hundred times as much as had been planted(Matthew 13:23)!?
