How to handle your thoughts

January 9, 2013

Genesis 6:5

The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.

Yesterday my good friend asked me a good question, that we all struggle with, and we all we continue to struggle with. He asked me, how do you handle or control thoughts that are bad? Meaning lustful, evil, hateful, or anything else along these lines.

The above verse gives God’s view of how He sees Man’s heart. We first need to realize and accept that we have the potential to be evil to our core, continually. Once we realize and accept this we need to repent.

We are not to live in a state or mindset of condemnation. But rather in a state of gratitude and awe of what God has done for us, through His one and only Son Jesus. Jesus died for our sins. Not so we can continue sinning, but in order for us to break free from the chains of sin and become slaves to righteousness!

Some of us may see this as a boring, and restrictive lifestyle. But it is actually quite the opposite. When you live in complete honesty, integrity and love; it is complete freedom! Don’t get me twisted, it is difficult but the rewards are far greater.

So how do we apply this? Well we need to always turn to the Word of God for guidance and this it what it tells us:

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8

So keep working at it. It takes time. It takes effort. There will be slips, stumbles and falls. But keep pressing on towards the goal of righteousness, through faith that is pleasing to God. Which in turn will be pleasing to those around you that love and care for you; and want you to be the best YOU.
