Nibble of Bread : I WILL…

December 17, 2012

James 4:13-16

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

Ever spoke like this? I will go here, I will do this, I will be this; I know I have. This verse jumped out of the page this morning and slapped me in the face! The last sentence says this type of boasting is evil, well maybe some of you are asking; how so?

God sent His son, Jesus, to be our Lord and Savior. He paid the ultimate price for our sins so that we may find abundant life here on earth, and eternal life with Him in heaven. God’s design is for us to love Him as a wife should love and honor her husband, being faithful in all areas of the relationship. Desiring further intimacy, knowledge and understanding of her husband each day. We were created to get to know Him more and more each day. To knock on His door, to lean on His Rock, to nestle in His green pastures.

This is only possible when we seek Him for guidance, direction and clarity in our lives. When we make our own plans, when we do things out of our motives, without checking on the Lord we allow the sinful, fleshly nature of our minds and bodies to take over. This is a seed called Pride. As that seed continues to grow, our motives will continue to be formed in the image of Satan, rather than the image of God.

Pride tells us we don’t need God. Pride tells us we got it all under control. Pride tells us that our plans our Great! However God’s Word clearly tells otherwise. God’s Word tells us that we may make plans but, the Lord’s plans will prosper. Proverbs 21:2 says that: Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts. Be careful of your heart, be honest with yourself and your motives. Make sure you: Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness,  and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:33).

Amen brother, I think we all tend to do this almost on a daily basis. I make all sorts of plans for all kinds of little things without going to God first. I’m sure that’s why most of my plans tend not to work out the way I plan for it to.

    • Yes my braddah, it really is something that doesn’t come naturally. We need to truly learn to seek, listen, and lean on the Spirit of God more each day.
