Nibble of Bread: Is your loyalty divided?

December 15, 2012

James 1:5-8

5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

loyal

When this verse says: be sure your faith is in God alone. It is referring to the divisions in our hearts and minds that we allow the devil to create and strengthen. Wavering in this context refers to someone that maybe goes to church every once in a while, or reads their Bible from time to time, or remembers to pray when things aren’t going to well. Then we may feel a little better about ourselves for a few weeks, however we continue in the normal behaviors and customs of the world around us.

Then we pray and expect God to answer. This verse clearly says: don’t expect to receive anything from The Lord if we live in such a manner. Christianity is supposed to be an illustration of marriage. God has designed it that way, in fact marriage as we know it is supposed to imitate God’s relationship with us. Unfailing love and commitment.

God longs for our loyalty to Him. There is no magic formula, or certain amount of hours, or prayers that is required. But He does want, is our heart. All of it, God is to marvelous and glorious to have to compete with our TV, our Facebook account, our hobbies, and many other selfish desires we all have. Being unstable (as this verse refers) in all your ways is not a good way to live. It’s like watching a drunk stumbling down the street, waiting for him to fall on his face.
