Romans is a beautiful book. I recently learned that the first 8 chapters of Romans have the theology, or teaching of Christianity. Pretty much in a nutshell. The second 8 chapters teach us how to apply, and live it.

Romans 5:

3-4 – Any trials we may be having we always have to remember that God is in control. No matter how bad the situation may seem, no matter what happens. God wants to turn that bad into good, however He can only do that when we allow Him.

12-21 – Really cool concept. Because of Adam we all are victims of Sin. This one we have no choice over, all fall short of God’s glorious standard. But because of Jesus we all can find life and victory over sin and death. The bummer for some people, is for this one we have a choice, and many choose to not believe. Yet God is so forgiving; look at verse 17: you could argue that the sin of Adam was greater than any sin, any man has ever created. Yet! Greater than all of that sin, is God’s wonderful grace and his free, undeserved gift of righteousness! Thank you Jesus!!

Romans 6,7:

We are no longer slaves to sin, but slaves to righteousness. We may be embarrassed of our past, or how we used to act. We may slip, and stumble in sin, but we immediately feel guilty and don’t like what we did. These are the chains of righteousness. Enjoy those chains, they keep us from bringing shame to our God. These chains are light and easy to carry, unlike our old chains that were heavy and filled with all kinds of dark secrets.

Paul was an amazing instrument for the Lord God used Him to do so many great things in the name of Jesus. Yet he describes His sinful nature and fleshly battles in chapter 7. If this strong man of God battled sin in this way, yet still triumphed. Why can’t we? We need to know in our hearts that our sinful nature is bad, nasty and evil. So we need to fight it off daily, maybe hourly. We need constant maintenance in the Word, to equip us for every battle and good work. In this way our heart stays soft and moldable, in-tuned and obedient to the leading of the Spirit.

Romans 8:

There is a good handful of verses in this chapter that really can build, encourage and strengthen our Spirit. Here are a few that I personally have used in my own spiritual battles:

1 – So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.

11-  The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

28 –  And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

32 – Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?

37 – No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

38-39 –  And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Bible is called The Sword of the Spirit, these are verses that can be used to fight off spiritual attacks from the devil. When the devil tells you, you cant do it, you’re not good enough, you’re not smart enough; you just meditate on verse 11, or verse 37. When the devil keeps trying to hold your past against you, when he keeps reminding you of you sin, and it is haunting you; remember verse 1. This is how we fight back, this is how we find overwhelming victory in Christ Jesus.
