Matthew 17:

24-27 – This is a really cool example of Jesus showing us how to be blameless, even if it is not a direct law or command from God. Sometimes it may be viewed as being double-minded, but we really are just trying to strengthen those that are weak in faith. Being obedient to the Holy Spirit is very important in these types of circumstances, that way we don’t cause others to stumble, or let certain behaviors leading us to stumble.

Matthew 18:

1-10 – Child-like faith is an amazing analogy. For those of you that have kids, its amazing to think of their actions and relate it to faith. Like how hungry a child is to learn something new, or the simple pleasures that can mean so much. Or how bout how much a child adores his mother and father, and wants to be in their presence constantly, anything to avoid the feeling of abandonment or loneliness.

15-20 – The correct and biblical process to handle habitual sin in a church. This approach is very difficult and many churches do not follow this, yet the ones that do are ostracized. Sin in no joke to God, and should be dealt with accordingly. Obviously this is not for the everyday sin that we all struggle with and face, but probably referring to the bigger sins, in habitual form that can lead others away from Christ.

21-35 – 70 x 7 = 490. That’s a lot of forgiving. Obviously no one could keep track of that number, so the point is clearly never stop forgiving. Not to be confused with the passage before on correction, we must correct but we must forgive and continue praying for our brothers. Forgiveness is tough for all of us, I don’t think there is anyone that has never struggled with this one, but clearly it is very important that we learn to master this skill of love without boundaries and record. People may say they forgive, but the heart will truly show it (verse 35).

Matthew 19:

5-6 – Marriage is for a man to leave his father and mother and be united as one with his wife. God’s simple design for marriage. Homosexuality is a sin, just like sexual immorality, pornography, and lustful thoughts. It is not right in God’s eyes and we need repentance if we are involved in any of these. Not judgment, but forgiveness and correct teaching with love.

16-30 – This can be a very confusing passage. It can very easily be taken out of context. Everyone doesn’t need to sell everything and give it to the poor in order to achieve salvation. However we do need hearts that do not hold anything above God. If we hold anything above God, we will be found in error as this man was.

Personally I tend to judge rich people too much, that they will not find salvation. I am wrong because with God everything is possible. I need to pray that God softens my heart, forgives me, and pray that these rich people will be blessed with a heart for God’s Kingdom! The Radical teaching by Pastor David Platt makes a great point. In America all of us are rich compared to millions of people throughout third world countries. Obviously on different levels here, but the point was well taken. That made me very scared and convicted, I am filthy rich compared to many people in these countries. Lord please forgive me for being so foolish and judgmental, give me a heart to bless others with all the greatness you have given me. Amen.
