Nibble of Bread : Cock-a-doodle-doo

Mark 14:72

72 A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Not only do the words of Jesus our Messiah never fail or disappear (Mark 13:31). They will always convict us when we are wrong. This verse really spoke to me this morning about our sin, trespasses or wrong doings; whatever you want to call it. Jesus himself, told Peter that he would deny Him. Peter not only did it, he did it three times. In human eyes this is a very serious offense against almighty God right?

Although, according to the actions of Jesus before the offense (Mark 14:22-24), and after (John 21), Jesus loved Peter through his denial.

Have we ever done wrong? Of course. Have we ever felt so guilty that we avoid God? Of course. Have we ever denied Jesus Christ? Maybe, Probably (I know I have. Not proud of it). Can we be forgiven of all of those? Absolutely! Jesus is made strong in our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9). That is the beauty of knowing our God lived in our shoes. He knows the weaknesses we have, He knows the stumbles we will have. So it is not a matter of what we have done wrong, or what we have not done right. What matters is what we do when our sin is called upon.

We could do as Peter did. Find forgiveness from Jesus. Then turn your life into being a light for the gospel. The gospel, that truly is the only message of hope that many people we know NEED to hear!

In verse 27 Jesus states “all of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written, I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” In verse 29, Peter states, “even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.” In response, Jesus tells Peter in verse 30, “assuredly I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” Peter continues to insist and in verse 31 he states “if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” In verse 33, Jesus took Peter, James and John and told them to “stay here and watch” while He went to pray to the Father. After praying, Jesus came and saw them sleeping and said to Peter in verse 37 … “could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (verse 38). In verses 39-42, Jesus catches them sleeping 2 more times prior to His betrayal. Although Peter insists that he will never deny Jesus and that he will follow Jesus to the grave if need be, Peter failed when Jesus told him to stay and watch while He went and prayed. Rather than watch and pray, Peter falls asleep. This ultimately leads up to Jesus being taken away and Peter denying Christ 3 times. I could only imagine the pain and sorrow Peter felt when he realized Jesus was right. I pray we all continue to “watch and pray” as the devil is always ready and willing to catch us.
