Nibble of Bread : Prayer and Fasting

November 1, 2012

Mark 9:29

29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

This verse is taken from a story in Mark 9:14-29 where a demon possessed boy is healed by Jesus. What makes this story so intriguing is that the disciples of Jesus were unsuccessful at their attempt(s) to cast this demon out prior to the arrival of Jesus. Jesus arrives on the scene and asked the Father of the boy, how long the boy has been like this (which I think is a very interesting question for Jesus to ask). Then Jesus cast this demon out of the boy.

In verse 19 he spoke to the crowd (including his disciples), and called them a faithless generation. We all know that the disciples of Jesus, believed in Him. So Jesus was not saying they had no faith. But what Jesus is referring to here is that they have not been maintaining their faith. Our faith is developed by constantly seeking God, whether prayer, praise, time in the word, or just ordinary conversations with Him. The disciples have not been building up their Spirit Man to the level Jesus felt they should be at.

Later in verse 28, they asked Him why they could not do it. Jesus’ reply was our verse, Prayer and Fasting. We all are familiar with the topic of prayer. We probably don’t do it as much as we should. In fact Jesus was God in the flesh and He is referenced many times on how He went alone to pray. So how much more should we pray? The same with fasting, it is a tool that can be used to intensify our prayers. We are denying the desires of the flesh and leaning on the Spirit of God within us to strengthen us. Fasting is a big topic, so here are some references for you to check out. Although I do want to encourage you to seek God, and ask Him how you can learn and grow more with the topic and skill of Prayer with Fasting.

* Thanks to Pastor Wayne at BibleTrack for these references, and your understanding and knowledge of Prayer and Fasting.

  1. Thanks for leaving the note for me at Yes, we survived Sandy scare with no problems where we live — just a bit of high wind, but nothing like the devastation you see onTV. It was very thoughtful of you to write and express your concern. Ron <

Great chapter. I love verse 23, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
