Nibble of Bread : Salvation by Mouth

October 8, 2012

Romans 10:9-10

9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.

The Bible speaks of several ways to salvation. Sometimes people break them up and isolate them, putting greater emphasis on one, and maybe even neglecting another. I want to bring them all into the light. While emailing a good brother this morning about salvation, God put it on my heart to share a few things about salvation, followed up by baptism. Today we will start about salvation by mouth, probably the most common, and the method that receives the most recognition. As always any questions, comments, concerns or encouragements are highly encouraged. Dont hesitate to let me know by email, or comments. Lets grow!

The Bible has many examples, stories, parables and analogies of how powerful our mouths are. Are mouths can do so much good and so much damage with as little as one word in the right situation. So when God says that we are saved by confession with our mouth, there is more than just a verbal repetitive saying here. As verse 10 says, the believing in our heart is what makes us right with God. This is where it starts is in the heart. Our mouths are a direct reflection of our heart. If the heart is dirty, the mouth is dirty. If the heart is clean, the mouth is clean. In our heart we begin the process of salvation, by believing first in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. This is the starting line of a life long journey with Jesus Christ as our Lord. If we feel the power of God moving strongly in our hearts we then make this confession. But the most important thing here to know is that it does not end here. We must realize that we don’t deserve salvation or eternal life through Jesus Christ. The Bible says we are all sinners, and we all fall short of God’s glorious standard (Romans 3:23). There is nothing any of us can do to make God better off, there is nothing we have to offer God. We are mere human flesh created from the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7). But yet by God’s unfailing love, mercy and grace He offers us hope, joy and salvation.
