Sword of the Spirit

Ephesians 6:17

…and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

I saw a few weeks ago a billboard that read: “Dusty Bibles lead to dirty lives”. In the book of Joshua it says to study this book of instruction continually and to meditate on it day and night. You also hear Jesus followers always saying you gotta read your bible! Whats all the fuss about reading the Bible? Well let my try to explain. In Matthew 4:3-11, Jesus is being tempted by the devil himself. The devil is very crafty, deceiving and conniving; the devil is also no dummy. He knows the Word of God better than all of us, remember before He was Satan He was in the very presence of God. But in this passage the devil tries to use actual scripture to deceive the Son of Man, Jesus. But in each of the devil’s three attempts the only response Jesus gives is scripture. You see what the devil was doing was taking actual scripture, twisting it, and trying to use it to devour Jesus. But Jesus, being God in the flesh knows the only way to defeat evil is with the true, living , powerful Word of God. Jesus cut, diced and shredded every attempt the devil threw at Him. Jesus was well equipped with His sword, He knew it inside and out because He is the Word (John 1:1). The devil is constantly attacking us, it’s a spiritual thing, so we don’t necessarily see it, but the Word makes it very clear, It is Real!

Dont be fooled by comfort. The devil loves when we get comfortable. That’s why we need to study our sword. We need to carry it in our hearts. We need to know how to use it correctly. When the devil makes attempts to attack our marriage, our kids, our minds; we need to be able to defend ourselves and fight back. A soldier in battle can only take so much blows. You cannot just play defense or you will die. Spiritual death is real, and without your sword you will have spiritual death. There is no way to win a sword fight without a sword. The devil has his, do you have yours?

I love versus 10-17. I’m a history buff. I especially like reading about the medieval ages of knights, kings, castles and chivalry, so when it talks about putting on the “whole armor of God” I love the description it gives and how each piece of the armor represents something. Verse 16 is most important as it states “above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” The shield and sword go hand in hand with one another. It was the main piece of armor and weaponry used by knights in the medieval ages. The same is true for us and our spiritual battle against the devil everyday. We need faith (in Christ), which is our shield, to resist the devil and deflect the fiery darts the devil will throw our way, and we need a sword (the sword of the Sprirt), which is God’s word, to combat the devil’s lies, deceits and corruption. Without faith in Christ (our shield) we are left open to the attacks of the devil and without the word of God (our sword) we fall victim to the lies and deceitfullness of the devil. I pray we always have our shield and sword ready for battle against the devil.

    • Im not a big history guy. But I do love and appreciate the reality of the Armor of God. Very powerful and very true! Thanks for your powerful insight!
