Nibble of Bread : Luke 17:4

September 22, 2012

Can you forgive this much?

Luke 17:4

And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent’, you shall forgive him.”

The Bible has the ability to cut you right down to your heart and soul (Hebrews 4:12), if you allow it. Many of us may read a scripture like this and find ways to basically say, it doesn’t apply to me. Or when Jesus says to forgive 70 times 7 times (Matthew 18:22). In all honesty, to be able to accomplish this verse would be truly super natural. If Jesus Christ lives in you, then you have the ability to do super natural things like this. But many of us have Jesus in our hearts and there is no way we could do this. Why not? Well, several things. One is we havent allowed God to fully transform our hearts and mind into the new creation, that we were created to be once we gave our lives to Him (Romans 12:2). Because 70 times 7 isn’t the cutoff point, Jesus is declaring a mindset here. Basically a heart change that if you could forgive this much, then there is no cutoff. Secondly this is not how the world thinks or teaches. If your best friend was wronged by someone three times in a day, we naturally would be commanding them, get the heck away from that guy. So in our flesh we have a lot working against this teaching. But we need to work at it. In order to do things through Christ we need to build that relationship, through prayer, meditating on God’s Word, and quiet time with Him. We need to knock so the door can be opened, we need to ask and we shall receive, because if we call on Him, He will answer (Jeremiah 33:3). Like anything it takes practice, it takes work and it takes commitment. But this practice will take on eternal rewards far greater than any award, recognition or prize!

Such a powerful verse. Our forgiveness towards those who have sinned against us and who ask for our forgiveness and repent should be never ending. To live by this verse is impossible without Christ in our hearts. No one in their right mind would continue to forgive someone who continually sins against them day after day after day. It is against our nature, our sinful nature to be exact. But w/ Christ all things are possible. Only with the help of the Holy Spirit and the transforming of our hearts can we apply this verse to our lives. Well said brother K.

    • Yes it is so powerful. It is amazing to think that we can truly live this way through Christ. The awesome thing is if we actually do this how we can bring all Glory to Christ. People without Christ in their hearts may actually look at us as fools. But if they have enough wisdom to step back and look at what it takes to actually live that way…then To God Be All the Glory! Missed you Brother!
