Nibble of Bread : Deuteronomy 6:5-7

September 14, 2012

Be a Godly Dad

Deuteronomy 6:5-7

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

Every time I read this verse it just floors me. God ties the greatest commandment with how often we are supposed to convey that love to our kids in the same passage. That speaks volumes, I believe God is showing us how important raising our kids in God’s love really is. According to verse 7, it seems to me that those times are the big time blocks in our lives that could pretty much span the course of the day. In other words we should always be finding ways to infuse God into everything with our children all day long. Depending upon their ages of course the approach will be different. But that’s why it is so important for us to be growing in the Word of God daily, so that He can fill us with the wisdom and knowledge we need to pass on. The children we have, actually belong to God as I mentioned yesterday. So we must take on the full responsibility in raising God’s children up to obey His commands, to love Him with all their heart, soul and strength. If we do not, we will have to answer for it when we come face to face with God. As we all know it is not easy, but raising kids up with God as the forefront allows them to avoid many of the pitfalls and mistakes maybe some of us had to face when God was not our Lord and Saviour.

Lets teach our kids of God first. Lets make that our priority. Teaching them our hobbies, or to be the best in sports is temporary. Those things will never be the greatest gift you can give them. But teaching them to love and serve God with all their hearts, all the days of their lives is the best gift any child can receive.
