Nibble of Bread : John 7:49

Head knowledge vs. Spiritual Truth

John 7:49

This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!

This verse is taken from a discussion between the religious leaders and some of the guards that were supposed to arrest Jesus. The Holy Spirit nudged my heart a little with this passage, because it is something that is still prevalent today. Many people today doubt God, the Bible and Jesus for a variety of reasons. But one of those reasons is too much head knowledge. The reason this is bad spiritually, is because head knowledge can easily contradict spiritual truth. God is Spirit so we cannot place Him in a box, and conform Him to what we envision God to be like. The people who try to do this realize He does not fit in this box, and therefore declare because He doesn’t fit these dimensions He must not be real. The same problem happens when we feel that God really wouldn’t want us to do certain things or act certain ways because that would be against the flow of society. So a modified christianity is adopted, leading us into another form of compartmentalizing God. God is seeking those that are thirsty for His truth, and wants them to come to Him. All that are truly thirsty for truth will come to Him, will believe in Him, and Rivers of living water will flow from his heart (Vs. 37-38).

In verse 46 I think many of the guards began to believe in Jesus. Verse 46 states “The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”. Rather than open their hearts and listen to the guards and the teachings of Jesus, the Pharisees mocked them and asked them if they to have been deceived. I could only imagine any glimpse of these guards believing and getting saved was shot down by fear of the Pharisees and their proclamation that every one who believes in Jesus is cursed. So sad.

    • That is sad. Thats whats so gnarly about following Jesus. If we follow Him with complete devotion it will never be easy. If it is easy, then we might want to take a look at our lives and see how true our lives are to the Word of God.
