Slice of Bread : Colossians 3

June 18, 2012

Verses 1-2 is something that will take lots of practice and effort. We are surrounded by the world, its ways and thoughts. Whether it’s the T.V shows or movies you watch; the music you listen to or the people you associate with. If these are the main influences in your life and there is no heavenly mindset here, this will be a difficult skill to tackle. My Bible says “set your sights”, think of a sniper guy. When he sets his sights on a target there is nothing else in his view. All he sees is that target. There can be absolute chaos around him, but it don’t matter. He has tucked himself into his hiding spot, he has his camouflage he is trusting in and nothing matters but what is on the other end of that sight. Can you have this kind of focus on the realities of heaven? You can, but it takes work. Strive for it, it will create in you a mindset that is eternally driven for the purpose and glory of Jesus Christ!

Verse 11 is heavy. What I got was  : Born Again = Jesus. So any of us that turn our lives over to Christ or get born again, or as the Word calls it “this new life” need to understand that Jesus lives inside of us. It doesn’t matter who we are or were we are from, Jesus is at the core. So we need to be careful of anything outside of brotherly love. Sometimes we may get angry, irritated or judgemental towards a fellow brother. But we have to remember that our Lord and Saviour Jesus lives in them the same as He does in us.

Verses 12-15 have a lot going on, but let me try to highlight some things that really spoke to me.

“Since God chose you…” :

we are all chosen children of God. Those that have been born again are chosen by Him. We need to realize that God wants all mankind to be saved, but for whatever his reasons He has chosen us to be aware and in Love with Him. We also need to realize that we didn’t come to God on our own merit. But by the His grace and mercy, he revealed himself to us. Or in other words, He has opened our hearts, eyes and ears to Him. We also need to carry the responsibility of being chosen ones, we need to uphold our image by our actions for the Glory of God. Not our image for our own gain, but so that in all we do God gets all the glory and praise!

“you must clothe yourselves…” :

the key word here is must. It is not a choice to clothe ourselves of God’s goodness, we must do it. When we don’t do it we are unable to bring God glory through our actions. I understand we all slip and stumble. But our goal should be to exude these traits of love.

“forgive anyone…”

It doesn’t say forgive some people. Or only the ones that didn’t cross you real bad. It says forgive anyone, which means everyone, which also means forgive for anything. We have touched on this before, but this is key to really seek true forgiveness by God’s true love. Jesus set the example for us to follow.

“peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts…”

what rules your heart? worry, lust, stress, anxiety, money…? The list can be endless but we need Peace. The Bible says that as we live in Jesus we can find a Peace that passes all understanding. We don’t need to know why things are a certain way. We build up our faith that gives us the confidence and hope in the Peace of God, which can overpower anything and never be taken away.
